Chemetry and Permascand announce collaboration on electrochemical cells for eShuttle® technology

Moss Landing, CA and Ljungaverk, Sweden – October 5, 2020. Chemetry and Permascand are pleased to announce they are working together to scale-up and commercialize a novel electrochemical cell for Chemetry’s eShuttle® technology. Chemetry and Permascand will collaborate to finalize the design and to fabricate the Chemetry cell ensuring optimum performance and manufacturability.

Chemetry’s electrochemical cell is unique in its use of three chambers and two membranes, allowing the process to separate the brine into halide and sodium ions with the lowest possible power consumption. Permascand is a global leader in electrochemistry, cell design and manufacturing and will use their expertise to ensure full reliability and a competitive cost base for the commercial electrolyzer.

Chemetry’s eShuttle® platform combines electrochemistry and catalysis to enable more sustainable process technologies for commodity chemicals. The proprietary electrochemical cell allows Chemetry to oxidize metal ions in the electrochemical cell which are then reacted with hydrocarbon feedstocks. The cell design has been developed over many years at Chemetry’s pilot facility in Moss Landing, California. Working with Permascand, Chemetry will be able to optimize the design for both reliability and manufacturability, enabling Chemetry and its partners to scale-up to commercial production, where thousands of cells are combined to create world-scale production facilities.

Permascand has nearly 50 years of experience in fabricating electrochemical cells and the associated coatings and equipment that complement Chemetry’s technology. Permascand’s expertise ranges from prototype development through to full-scale contract manufacturing of electrochemical cells supporting the global water treatment, electrification & renewables, and chlorate & chlor-alkali markets.

Zeton and Chemetry Building Modular eShuttle® EDC Demonstration Plant

MOSS LANDING, California, and ONTARIO, Canada, September 10, 2020 - Zeton, based in Ontario, Canada, has been selected by Chemetry to provide detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication and factory testing of a modular demonstration plant based on Chemetry’s new state of the art technology to produce Ethylene Dichloride (EDC). Zeton and Chemetry have designed the 1000 metric ton/year demonstration plant to prove the reliability and commercial viability of Chemetry’s eShuttle® process.

The project is being designed and built at Zeton’s facility. Once complete, the modular plant will be packaged and shipped to Braskem’s Vinyls site at Maceio, Alagoas State, Brazil. After reassembly, the plant will be prepared for operation and commissioned by Braskem and Chemetry with assistance from Zeton. The plant will be in operation for approximately one year to adequately demonstrate the performance and reliability of the new process.

Zeton was chosen by Chemetry for their world class know-how and capability to design and fabricate scale-specific production plants on time and on budget. Zeton’s facility is designed to build small scale plants in modular fashion and perform factory acceptance testing of the integrated plant on its site in Ontario before disassembling the plant and shipping it to the final installation location. This capability results in smoother, expedited commissioning at the site.

Chemetry’s eShuttle® EDC Process produces EDC, Hydrogen and Caustic Soda from Ethylene, Water, Sodium Chloride salt and Electricity using 25 to 50% less power than the current industrial processes. The eShuttle® process does not produce chlorine gas, reducing the process safety risk when compared to other chloralkali processes. EDC is the primary raw material for PVC resins, widely used in construction and infrastructure projects around the world. Reducing the power consumption is an effective way to improve the sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of this chemical process. The reduced power consumption also allows producers in higher power cost regions of the world compete more effectively with producers in low power cost regions.

Chemetry and Braskem to build EDC Demonstration Plant based on breakthrough chemical production technology

MOSS LANDING, California, and SAO PAULO, Brazil, August 20, 2020 - Chemetry, a technology innovation company dedicated to the development of environmentally sustainable chemical processes with superior economics, and Braskem, the leading producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas, will construct and operate a Demonstration Plant using Chemetry’s eShuttle® technology for the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC) in Brazil.

The eShuttle® EDC Process uses a unique metal halide ion process to produce high purity EDC, a commodity chemical used primarily for PVC production, without the generation of chlorine gas. The process significantly reduces electrical power consumption and production costs compared to the latest generation chlor-alkali processes. The eShuttle® technology has been pioneered in Chemetry’s state of the art laboratories and fully integrated pilot plant in Moss Landing, California.

The technology uses the same feedstocks and produces the same products (EDC, caustic and hydrogen) as conventional processes, making it ideal for both greenfield projects and retrofits of existing chloralkali/EDC plants. It also offers EDC producers the ability to expand production within the same cell room footprint and power requirements.

The agreement leverages Chemetry’s expertise in electrolyzer design and halide chemistry with Braskem’s long term strength in chlor-alkali and vinyls plant operation and product marketing.

The initial focus of this agreement will be the construction of a demonstration unit to be installed at Braskem’s Chlor-alkali Maceió site, Alagoas State, Brazil. Braskem’s Global Process Technology team will support the project.

Chemetry Press Release - California - November 19, 2019

Chemetry, a company focused on developing lower energy technologies in the chemical space, and Technip Energies, a global leader in the engineering and construction of onshore/offshore, subsea and surface projects, have signed an exclusive cooperation agreement for the licensing and engineering of Chemetry’s eShuttle® technology for the production of Propylene Oxide (PO). PO is a commodity chemical produced worldwide and used primarily in polyurethanes products, coatings, and personal care products. Compared to most commonly used processes, Chemetry’s PO production technology significantly lowers energy use, reduces carbon footprint and capital expense, and nearly eliminates waste water generation.

The technology uses a unique metal halide ion process to produce high purity PO without generating harmful chlorine gas or large quantities of waste water. Compared to the chlorohydrin process, the eShuttle® PO process uses 60% less electrical power and has no waste water effluent to treat. The anticipated capital cost for the eShuttle® process is approximately 25% less than the cost for a comparable world scale facility.

The agreement leverages Chemetry’s expertise in electrolyzer design, electrochemistry, and catalysis with Technip Energies global strength in technology licensing, process scale-up, engineering and procurement. Technip Energies Process Technology center in Boston, Massachusetts, which has extensive first-of-a-kind technology development and engineering experience, will manage the agreement.

“The eShuttle® Technology for Propylene Oxide and Reducing CO₂Emissions in the PVC Supply Chain”

Innovation: The novelty of the eShuttle® technology lies in the elimination of chlorine as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), along with a chlorine-free route to the production of propylene chlorohydrin, a precursor to propylene oxide (PO).

Benefits: The eShuttle® process provides a 20% reduction in cell voltage over state-of-the-art chlor-alkali membrane plants and conversion of these plants to the eShuttle® process will reduce emissions by 10 million tonnes of CO₂per year. The eShuttl®e process for PO reduces the power demand by 60% with respect to the conventional chlorohydrin process. In both cases, asbestos or mercury from the standard chlor-alkali and direct chlorination processes is eliminated, and the need for chlorine gas is avoided thereby removing the potential for creation of hazardous chlorination products and by-products commonly associated with current commercial PVC or PO processes. For the production of PO, there is a reduction in total waste to 5 tonnes of water/tonne of PO. Further innovations in the PO process permits the recycle of the concentrated brine and allows the process to be run as a zero liquid discharge process.

Chemetry’s eShuttle® Technology for propylene oxide (PO) addresses the environmental challenges associated with existing commercial routes and shows superior process economics. Similar to the traditional chlorohydrin process for PO, wherein PO forms by ring-closing a chloro-propanol molecule with NaOH, the eShuttle® process avoids the co-product liabilities associated with the use of organic peroxides. When compared to the reaction conditions used in the chlorohydrin route, the eShuttle® reaction conditions have two environmental benefits. First, the eShuttle® process produces propylene chlorohydrin without the use of chlorine (Cl₂) gas by using aqueous copper chloride as the oxidant. The co-products in the reaction are thus HCl and CuCl, which can be reacted with oxygen in a separate vessel to regenerate the aqueous CuCl₂. Regenerating CuCl₂through chemical oxidation reduces the power demand of the electrochemical cells by more than 60% when compared with the traditional chlorohydrin process. Second, the eShuttle® reactor allows for the reaction to be run in such a way as to isolate the chlorohydrin prior to the epoxidation step. This separation step reduces wastewater by almost 90% and allows the possibility of zero liquid discharge.

Chemetry’s eShuttle® process eliminates chlorine (Cl₂) as an intermediate in the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC). The eShuttle® technology replaces chlorine gas with a circulating stream of aqueous copper chloride. Cupric chloride (CuCl₂) is contacted with ethylene where it reacts to form EDC and cuprous chloride (CuCl). The CuCl is then regenerated back to CuCl₂in an electrochemical cell that coproduces NaOH and H₂. When integrated in this way, the eShuttle® technology provides a straightforward replacement for the chlor-alkali/direct chlorination processes. In addition to eliminating the fugitive emissions and other human safety risks associated with Cl₂gas, the use of aqueous CuCl₂also reduces the GHG footprint of EDC. Converting the anode reaction to Cu(I) oxidation saves approximately 600 mV of operating voltage in the electrochemical cell, which in turn reduces the power demand by almost 20%. Because the chlor-alkali process is electrically intensive, retrofit of existing EDC plants will save more than 10 million tonnes of CO₂annually. The process economics, which are cost advantaged up to almost $100/tonne of NaOH, have been demonstrated at the pilot scale at Chemetry’s facility in Moss Landing, CA.

Technip Press Release - Paris, December 12, 2016

Technip and Chemetry have signed an exclusive cooperation agreement for the licensing and engineering of Chemetry’s eShuttle® technology for the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC). EDC is a commodity chemical produced worldwide and used primarily for PVC⁽¹⁾ plastic production. The technology significantly lowers energy use, reduces the carbon footprint and improves the safety of the chlor-alkali and EDC industries.

The technology uses a unique metal halide ion process to produce high purity EDC without the generation of harmful chlorine gas. The process significantly reduces electrical power consumption compared to latest generation chlor-alkali processes. Power savings can be reduced by nearly half compared to older diaphragm or mercury-based processes. Additionally, the process is ideally suited for integration with oxygen depolarized cathode technology⁽²⁾, which further increases energy savings. The technology was pioneered in Chemetry’s laboratory and integrated pilot demonstration facilities in Moss Landing, California.

The agreement leverages Chemetry’s expertise in electrolyzer design and halide chemistry with Technip’s global strength in technology licensing, process scale-up, engineering and procurement.

Technip’s operating center in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, will manage the agreement, with support from Technip’s office in Lyon, France. Both centers have first-of-a-kind technology development and engineering experience and are part of Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology, which looks after Technip’s expanding portfolio of onshore process technologies in petrochemicals, refining, hydrogen and syngas, polymers and gas monetization.

⁽¹⁾PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a widely produced synthetic plastic polymer that comes in two basic forms. The rigid form is used in construction of pipe, doors and windows; the flexible form is used for cable insulation and signage.

⁽²⁾The eShuttle® platform is compatible with Covestro’s oxygen depolarized cathode technology which introduces oxygen into the standard chlor-alkali cathodic reaction eliminating the production of hydrogen and lowering the energy required to produce sodium hydroxide.
