Chemetry, a company focused on developing lower energy technologies in the chemical space, and TechnipFMC, a global leader in the engineering and construction of onshore/offshore, subsea and surface projects, have signed an exclusive cooperation agreement for the licensing and engineering of Chemetry’s eShuttle™ technology for the production of Propylene Oxide (PO). PO is a commodity chemical produced worldwide and used primarily in polyurethanes products, coatings, and personal care products. Compared to most commonly used processes, Chemetry’s PO production technology significantly lowers energy use, reduces carbon footprint and capital expense, and nearly eliminates waste water generation.
The technology uses a unique metal halide ion process to produce high purity PO without generating harmful chlorine gas or large quantities of waste water. Compared to the chlorohydrin process, the eShuttle™ PO process uses 60% less electrical power and has no waste water effluent to treat. The anticipated capital cost for the eShuttle™ process is approximately 25% less than the cost for a comparable world scale facility.
The agreement leverages Chemetry’s expertise in electrolyzer design, electrochemistry, and catalysis with TechnipFMC’s global strength in technology licensing, process scale-up, engineering and procurement. TechnipFMC’s Process Technology center in Boston, Massachusetts, which has extensive first-of-a-kind technology development and engineering experience, will manage the agreement.

The eShuttle™ PO technology consumes only electricity, propylene and oxygen, producing PO in a near zero discharge process. As with the company’s EDC Process, by reusing portions of an existing plant’s infrastructure and process, retrofits of existing PO plants are possible. In addition, the lower capital and operating expense offer the opportunity for smaller plants to be located near existing customers, further reducing the carbon footprint of the supply chain.

“The eShuttle™ Technology for Propylene Oxide and Reducing CO2 Emissions in the PVC Supply Chain”
Innovation: The novelty of the eShuttle technology lies in the elimination of chlorine as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), along with a chlorine-free route to the production of propylene chlorohydrin, a precursor to propylene oxide (PO).
Benefits: The eShuttle process provides a 20% reduction in cell voltage over state-of-the-art chlor-alkali membrane plants and conversion of these plants to the eShuttle process will reduce emissions by 10 million tonnes of CO2 per year. The eShuttle process for PO reduces the power demand by 60% with respect to the conventional chlorohydrin process. In both cases, asbestos or mercury from the standard chlor-alkali and direct chlorination processes is eliminated, and the need for chlorine gas is avoided thereby removing the potential for creation of hazardous chlorination products and by-products commonly associated with current commercial PVC or PO processes. For the production of PO, there is a reduction in total waste to 5 tonnes of water/tonne of PO. Further innovations in the PO process permits the recycle of the concentrated brine and allows the process to be run as a zero liquid discharge process.
Chemetry’s eShuttle Technology for propylene oxide (PO) addresses the environmental challenges associated with existing commercial routes and shows superior process economics. Similar to the traditional chlorohydrin process for PO, wherein PO forms by ring-closing a chloro-propanol molecule with NaOH, the eShuttle process avoids the co-product liabilities associated with the use of organic peroxides. When compared to the reaction conditions used in the chlorohydrin route, the eShuttle reaction conditions have two environmental benefits. First, the eShuttle process produces propylene chlorohydrin without the use of chlorine (Cl2) gas by using aqueous copper chloride as the oxidant. The co-products in the reaction are thus HCl and CuCl, which can be reacted with oxygen in a separate vessel to regenerate the aqueous CuCl2. Regenerating CuCl2 through chemical oxidation reduces the power demand of the electrochemical cells by more than 60% when compared with the traditional chlorohydrin process. Second, the eShuttle reactor allows for the reaction to be run in such a way as to isolate the chlorohydrin prior to the epoxidation step. This separation step reduces wastewater by almost 90% and allows the possibility of zero liquid discharge.
Chemetry’s eShuttle process eliminates chlorine (Cl2) as an intermediate in the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC). The eShuttle technology replaces chlorine gas with a circulating stream of aqueous copper chloride. Cupric chloride (CuCl2) is contacted with ethylene where it reacts to form EDC and cuprous chloride (CuCl). The CuCl is then regenerated back to CuCl2 in an electrochemical cell that coproduces NaOH and H2. When integrated in this way, the eShuttle technology provides a straightforward replacement for the chlor-alkali/direct chlorination processes. In addition to eliminating the fugitive emissions and other human safety risks associated with Cl2gas, the use of aqueous CuCl2 also reduces the GHG footprint of EDC. Converting the anode reaction to Cu(I) oxidation saves approximately 600 mV of operating voltage in the electrochemical cell, which in turn reduces the power demand by almost 20%. Because the chlor-alkali process is electrically intensive, retrofit of existing EDC plants will save more than 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The process economics, which are cost advantaged up to almost $100/tonne of NaOH, have been demonstrated at the pilot scale at Chemetry’s facility in Moss Landing, CA.

Technip and Chemetry sign agreement for licensing and engineering of eShuttle™ technology
Proven technology reduces energy consumption in chlor-alkali plants

Technip and Chemetry have signed an exclusive cooperation agreement for the licensing and engineering of Chemetry’s eShuttle™ technology for the production of ethylene dichloride (EDC). EDC is a commodity chemical produced worldwide and used primarily for PVC(1) plastic production. The technology significantly lowers energy use, reduces the carbon footprint and improves the safety of the chlor-alkali and EDC industries.
The technology uses a unique metal halide ion process to produce high purity EDC without the generation of harmful chlorine gas. The process significantly reduces electrical power consumption compared to latest generation chlor-alkali processes. Power savings can be reduced by nearly half compared to older diaphragm or mercury-based processes. Additionally, the process is ideally suited for integration with oxygen depolarized cathode technology(2), which further increases energy savings. The technology was pioneered in Chemetry’s laboratory and integrated pilot demonstration facilities in Moss Landing, California.
The agreement leverages Chemetry’s expertise in electrolyzer design and halide chemistry with Technip’s global strength in technology licensing, process scale-up, engineering and procurement.
Technip’s operating center in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, will manage the agreement, with support from Technip’s office in Lyon, France. Both centers have first-of-a-kind technology development and engineering experience and are part of Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology, which looks after Technip’s expanding portfolio of onshore process technologies in petrochemicals, refining, hydrogen and syngas, polymers and gas monetization.

The eShuttle™ technology uses the same feedstocks and produces the same products (EDC, caustic and hydrogen) as conventional processes, making it ideal for retrofitting existing chlor-alkali/EDC plants especially where electrical costs are high. It also offers EDC producers the ability to expand production within the same cell room footprint and power requirements.

(1)PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a widely produced synthetic plastic polymer that comes in two basic forms. The rigid form is used in construction of pipe, doors and windows; the flexible form is used for cable insulation and signage.

Chemetry Adds Robert Snyder as Chief Strategy Officer

Moss Landing, CA, Sept. 26, 2016 – Chemetry, developer of the eShuttle™ platform, announced the addition of Robert “Bob” Snyder to the executive team as Chief Strategy Officer.
“Chemetry is excited to add a proven leader in the chemicals industry to the team,” said Ryan Gilliam, CEO, Chemetry. “After years of hard work in the lab and our piloting facilities, Chemetry has developed a technology that will truly change the way chemicals are made. Bob’s wealth of commercialization and industrial experience are critical to bringing Chemetry’s eShuttle™ platform to the market.”
Bob is a global chemicals and plastics industry executive and change manager. Throughout his career – which spans three major thermoplastics categories, specialty and commodity products, and major chemical companies through joint venture startups in the U.S. and Europe – he has captured operational improvements and skillfully built cultural alignment across acquired and geographically diverse businesses.
Most recently, Bob served as Vice President of Strategy for Axiall Corporation, a leading integrated chemicals and building products company. In that capacity, he led corporate planning, strategy, and M&A activity, implementing the divestiture of underperforming assets. Previously, he served as Vice President, Chlorovinyls and Aromatics, with commercial leadership and P&L responsibility for businesses with over $3 billion in revenue.
Before joining Axiall, Bob led a range of businesses in the U.S. and Europe at Nova Chemicals. He started with Nova in Switzerland as Vice President of the recently acquired polystyrene businesses. He returned to the U.S. as Global VP of Styrene Monomer and then Vice President and General Manager of the Performance Styrenics business. Bob began his career at Dow Chemical, where he advanced through Sales, Product Management, and Marketing, before joining DuPont Dow Elastomers as a member of the start-up team and leader of the global business development organization for the joint venture.
Bob holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia and a Master’s of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The eShuttle™ platform is a membrane based technology that avoids chlorine gas with a metal chloride reaction to produce caustic soda and a suite of chlorinated chemicals at less energy than traditional chlor-alkali and direct chlorination.
